This is an introduction to the central theme of Jesus’ ministry according to the Synoptic Gospels, the coming of the kingdom of God or the kingdom of heaven. Ridderbos also gives an overview of the fierce controversies over the character of this kingdom as it occurred in the first half of the twentieth century. The debates were dominated by the so-called eschatological school of Johannes Weiss and later Albert Schweitzer and Rudolf Bultmann.
